Fitness Instructor Training


The Group Fitness Instructor Training Course (GFIT) is a 10-week for credit class during which time students will learn all of the necessary information and skills to be a group fitness instructor. Students will be exposed to five different types of class formats: cardio, strength, dance, mind/body, and cycling. The training course consists of weekly lectures, teaching practice, master classes, and evaluative feedback. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and participate in group fitness classes and practice sessions outside of class. This training course requires a significant time commitment from all participants. No experience necessary.

Class Quick Facts

  • This course is offered in the Spring semester, Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:30-2:45pm at the City Campus Recreation Center.
  • This course utilizes the American Council on Exercise Group Fitness Instructor curriculum and prepares each student to take the Group Fitness Instructor exam. Students who wish to teach group fitness classes here at UNL Campus Rec must obtain their certification after taking the course, before beginning to teach.
  • This class can be taken for 2 credits or no credit and is a pass/no pass class
  • To register for the class, log onto MyRed and search for FITN 113N under Rec-Fitness.
  • This course is designed for UNL students only.

About the Instructor Training Course

During the 10 weeks of the GFIT course, you will be learning from the curriculum of the American Council on Exercise Group Fitness Instructor  preparation course. You will be exposed to every aspect of being a Group Fitness Instructor. This class involves a high degree of practical experience and you can expect to workout often. Read below for the general topics covered. *Note: No experience required

  • Anatomy
  • Exercise physiology
  • Fundamentals of applied kinesiology
  • Basic nutrition
  • Group fitness class design
  • Principles of adherence and motivation
  • Exercise and special populations
  • Group fitness business practices
  • Prevention and management of common injuries
  • All formats of University of Nebraska Group Fitness: cardio, strength, dance, mind/body, cycle, and water


Completion of this course does not guarantee that you will pass the ACE certification exam and does not guarantee employment. During the last weeks of the GFIT course, you may audition to teach group fitness classes at the University of Nebraska. If your audition goes well and you are offered a Group Fitness instructor position on our team, your employment will be contingent on passing the ACE Group Fitness Instructor certification exam.

Final hiring criteria include the following:

  • Your final audition at the end of the course
  • Your performance throughout the 10 weeks of the Instructor Training course
    • Includes turning in quizzes, participation, enthusiasm, attendance, leadership, and attitude
    • You must acquire a certification through the American Council on Exercise which costs $199.
