Top Tips to Stay Safe this Halloween

Halloween should be a memorable experience for all the right reasons. Whether you're cheering on the Huskers, attending a costume party or enjoying a quieter evening with friends, thoughtful decisions can make the difference.

  1. Plan ahead to stay fueled and hydrated.

Between tailgating and Halloween festivities, it’s sure to be a long day. Plus, Daylight Savings Time adds an extra hour to the night. Make sure you stay fueled with food and water throughout the day. Pro tip: head to the Student Tailgate at 3 p.m. at Meier Commons (green space by the Nebraska Union) for free food and a great Husker atmosphere.

  1. Pace yourself.

If you choose to drink, moderation and pacing are essential. Eating before and during celebrations, drinking water throughout the day and taking breaks can help you make more intentional decisions. Remember, drinking water, eating or taking a nap will not quickly eliminate alcohol from your system. Only time allows your body to process alcohol.

Stay connected with friends, look out for one another and respect everyone's decision about whether or not to drink. If someone appears to be experiencing alcohol poisoning or another medical emergency, call 911 rather than waiting for the situation to improve.

  1. Know when to call it a night and do so safely.

An extra hour on the clock doesn't mean you need an extra hour of partying. Sometimes the best way to enjoy that additional hour is to get some sleep.

Transportation should also be part of the plan. Never drink and drive. Arrange a designated driver, use a rideshare service or coordinate transportation with friends. With increased demand on Halloween, rideshare prices may rise, making it especially important to plan ahead.
