Time for a T-Break? Reset and refocus after 4/20

A swirl of smoke.

This upcoming weekend is April 20 (a.k.a. 4/20) - a day widely recognized in cannabis culture - so it’s a perfect time to consider something that could benefit your brain, body, and future: a Tolerance Break, or T-Break for short.

Cannabis can affect key areas of the brain that control memory, movement, coordination, balance, and judgment. Over time, regular use can build up your body’s tolerance, meaning you may need more to feel the same effects. That’s where a T-Break comes in.

Originally promoted by the University of Vermont, a T-Break is a voluntary pause from cannabis use—typically lasting 21 to 30 days—designed to help reset your tolerance and give your mind and body time to recover. Even if you only use occasionally, taking a break can help you regain balance and perspective.

Whether you view cannabis as harmless or recognize the potential for dependency, taking a break can help you explore your relationship with it—especially during high-stress times like the end of the semester.

Need a little help staying on track? The Clear 30 app offers both free and subscription-based support, using daily encouragement, peer motivation, and phone-based reminders to help you stay committed to your break. Learn more at Clear30.org

With just three weeks left until graduation or summer break, now is a great time to reset, refocus, and finish strong.

If you want to talk to someone about your cannabis use or are looking for support, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is here to help. Call 402-472-7450 and press 4 after hours for immediate assistance.
