Cooking Classes & Demonstrations

UNL Campus Recreation cooking classes and demonstrations teach participants the skills needed to prepare healthy meals that are simple, budget friendly, and delicious. The deadline for each class is 48 hours prior to class start.

Breakfast Club – Healthy Homemade Granola + Overnight Oats

Breakfast gives you energy to start a new day and is linked to many health benefits, including weight control and improved performance. But, in our rush to get out the door in the morning, we often skip it! In this breakfast bootcamp, you'll learn how to create a yummy homemade granola and plan out your breakfast for the week, including overnight oats and plenty of juicy fruit. We'll also review how to read nutrition labels to find ways to lower the amount of added sugar in our diet. You'll take home a jar of overnight oats to enjoy for breakfast the next morning.

Meal Kit Mondays

Let us make your meal-times easier! Forget those expensive meal delivery services and pre-order meal kits from our Wellness Kitchen. Then, pick up your ready-to-go, four-serving meals on the first Monday of the month at the Wellness Kitchen inside the Rec & Wellness Center anytime 4:30-5:30 p.m. We're here to fuel your week or help you stock your freezer!

Each meal kit includes everything you need for a delicious dinner in well under an hour – all you provide is the tools, cooking spray and some minor chopping/mixing/etc. We offer three different meal options for pick-up on the first Monday of each month. You'll need to order 48 hours prior to pick-up. You can choose one, two or three or double up on the same meal!

Just $15 per meal!

Registration is available until 5 p.m. the Friday prior to pick-up time.

(After placing your order, please email Amanda at arobine3@unl.edu with your choice of meals from the list of options below and note any food allergies you may have - we can accommodate! You may also order multiples of the same meal if you prefer.)

Parent + Kid Cooking classes

When kids participate in cooking, they are more likely to explore a variety of food and learn basic math skills along the way. Campus Recreation’s Kid + Parent Cooking Classes provide an easy way to teach the whole family about cooking while making fun memories, and each class includes dinner for the evening.

Not only do children help with making the meal, they’ll learn the basics about nutrition and food groups, while having fun with a new activity for the family. The Wellness Kitchen instructors take care of all the prep and clean-up. Classes are open to the public.

Class size is limited and instructors can accommodate all special dietary needs. After registering, participants will be contacted about any special dietary needs. This class is recommended for children aged three years and older.

Classic French Toast + Fruit & Yogurt Parfaits

Join us on Family Health & Fitness Day to learn a breakfast classic that's good any time of day! Parents and kids work together to create this yummy dish and learn basics like cracking an egg, using the skillet to make French toast and simple steps to a delicious fruit parfait they'll love.

Make + Take Lunch

Drop in over lunch to make a healthy, homemade meal. We'll lead you through cooking veggies on the stove top, cooking meat safely and how to plan for a quick lunch. After our brief cooking session, sit down to enjoy your lunch in the Wellness Kitchen or grab it and go! This lunch will fill you up so you won't be craving that unhealthy snack later in the day.

Strictly Plants – Sweet Potato Quesadillas + Homemade Guacamole

Tonight, we're keeping it strictly plants! If you've ever wondered about the vegan or vegetarian lifestyle or prefer whole plant-based meals, this is the class for you. It's important to recognize which nutrient deficiencies are commonly seen in plant-based eating and how to make sure you're getting enough nutrients in your diet. We'll learn how to keep our bodies fully nourished while we cook and dine on a delicious meal of Sweet Potato Quesadillas and Homemade Guacamole together.

Healthy Swaps – Cookie Skillet Individuals

You don't have to cut out desserts completely to keep a balanced diet. But, sugary desserts can often be hard to avoid. On National Healthy Eating Day we'll bake up some Cookie Skillet Individuals using alternative ingredients to better suit a healthy lifestyle and discuss other ways to avoid added sugars. Don't worry, these cookies still taste amazing and will satisfy your sweet tooth!

Staying on track with your health is difficult during the holidays. The key is portion size! In anticipation of those giant December meals, we'll discuss tips for not over-indulging and demonstrate a healthy version of a holiday favorite your family will love.

The Wellness Kitchen is the perfect environment to learn to cook or expand your skills. Classes include a cooking coach that will lead participants through each step of the cooking experience and will conclude with enjoying a delicious meal together. Come hungry!

These events are great for large groups and feature a cooking instructor front-and-center. With the help of cameras and large screens, instructors lead the group in preparing meals for them to duplicate in their own kitchens. Each guest enjoys a taste of what the instructor cooks.
