White Rim Trail  Bike Tour

Join us for a truly unique mountain bike tour of the famous White Rim Trail of Utah’s Canyonlands National Park. This 100 mile route is considered one of the world's great multi-day rides, taking you into the remote depths of sandstone canyons carved by the mighty Colorado and Green Rivers. Along the way, you’ll see arches, Indian ruins, towers, buttes, and unbelievable sunsets. This tour will be supported by a vehicle. We’ll carry all the food and camping equipment allowing you to enjoy the freedom of your 2-wheels to the fullest. Evenings will be spent under the starry Utah sky, resting for another beautiful day of cycling..

There will be a MANDATORY pre-trip meeting on 04/25/2011 at 7:00pm in the Campus Recreation Center Conference Room 55. (841 N.14th St., Lincoln, NE). For more information or questions, please contact UNL Outdoor Adventures at 472-4777 or Jordan Messerer at jmesserer2@unl.edu.

TRIP INFORMATION:

Plan to leave Saturday, May 7, 2011 and return to Lincoln the evening of Saturday, May 14, 2011.

TRIP INCLUDES:

  • Transportation to and from the White Rim Trail (We will be driving University of Nebraska Suburban's)
  • Food at activity site (You are responsible for your own food during the travels to and from the White Rim Trail)
  • Cycling Gear (Touring Bike, Helmet, etc.) - You can also bring your own bike!
  • Camping Gear (Tent, Sleeping Bag, etc.)
  • Camping Fees/Permits
  • Trip Leaders
  • Trip Insurance

COST DOES NOT INCLUDE:

  • PERSONAL GEAR NEEDED:
    • Weather appropriate clothing for cycling and camping (Preferably non-cotton clothing)
    • Light rain jacket and pants
    • Personal Items (Toiletries, Medications, Sunscreen)
    • Water Bottles

WEATHER:
The average high for Moab, Utah in May is 77 degrees and the average low is 47 degrees.

LEAVE NO TRACE:

UNL Outdoor Adventures, believes in running our trips by the Leave No Trace Principles. This means we will be good stewards of the earth, by only leaving footprints and only taking photos from the back country. There are 7 principles that we will follow during our trip:

  • Plan ahead and prepare
  • Travel and camp on durable surfaces
  • Dispose of waste properly
  • Leave what you find
  • Respect the Wildlife
  • Minimize campfires
  • Respect other visitors

PHYSICAL CONDITION:

UNL Outdoor Adventure trips are designed for both beginners and people that are more experienced. However, we want our participants to realize that even though a beginner could go on this trip, we advise people to take their physical condition seriously. Outdoor Adventure trips are very physical in nature. In order to get the most enjoyment out of the trip, being physically fit is a crucial part of this experience. Please do not hesitate to ask our staff about preparing for your adventure!

EXPEDITION BEHAVIOR:

The term Expedition Behavior was coined by NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) founder Paul Petzoldt, the following definition was taken from the NOLS web site (www.nols.edu).

  • Serve the mission and goals of the group.
  • Be as concerned for others as you are for yourself.
  • Treat everyone with dignity and respect.
  • Support leadership and growth in everyone.
  • Respect the cultures you contact.
  • Be kind and open-hearted.
  • Do your share and stay organized.
  • Help others, but don't routinely do their work.
  • Model integrity by being honest and accountable.
  • Admit and correct your mistakes.

PARTICIPANT RESPONSIBILITIES:

We expect our participants to complete all health forms and sign all waivers. Participants are required to attend all Pre-Trip meetings. The meeting dates will be given to you at the time of registration. Be prepared mentally and physically for the trip, even though most people only think of the trip being physically hard it can be mentally just as hard. UNL adventure staff also expects that all participants will obey all policies set fourth by the Land Management Agencies (State Parks, National Parks, BLM, Wilderness) we are traveling in. As well as policies made by our staff for your safety. As a participant of a UNL Outdoor Adventures trip, you agree to respect others that may be on the trip. And most of all we expect that each participant has an amazing trip that is full of fun and great memories.

CAMPING/LODGING:

All nights will be spent camping in designated campsites within the White Rim Trail area. All camping supplies will be provided by Outdoor Adventures.
