General Information

Nebraska's most varied climbing terrain offers climbers the chance to enjoy the benefits of rock climbing in one of the flattest states in the US. Come join a welcoming and committed climbing community, and see there's much more to climbing than merely the thrill and adrenaline.

Every enrolled student at UNL is offered a free climb each semester, so come by and check out what climbing has to offer. If you're not currently enrolled at UNL, don't let that stop you from coming in. Check out our pass options

-What do I need to know before I plan to come climb?
All climbers should be aware of the risks associated with climbing. Take a moment to review our waiver. Get a head start and complete the waiver ahead of time, so we can get you climbing as quickly as possible.

Learn the basic foundation of rope management skills, knots, equipment and policies required to climb at the Outdoor Adventures Center. From Couch to 5.10
Thursdays | February 2 - 23 | 6:30–8:30 p.m.

Outdoor Adventures Center, Climbing Wall
This 4-week class will give you tools to develop your strength in order for you to climb longer and more efficiently. Each week, you will advance your technique using various exercises and drills, as well as address various ways to train and build your climbing fitness. Class includes free climbing shoe and chalk bag rental. Both beginners and regular climbers are encouraged to attend.

Lead Climbing

This class meets two times for two hours with you and a partner and teaches foundational skills needed to dial in lead climbing and lead belaying at the climbing wall. Prior top rope climbing experience at or above 5.9 is required to succeed in this class. Completion of class provides a one-year Lead, Top Rope & Bouldering Pass.

League of Extraordinary Boulderers (LXB)

Get your team of three together and join the fun. All skill levels can participate in a weekly bouldering league where you can hone your skills or just have a good time. We do keep scores and prizes are awarded to the top teams at the end of the league.

Flatland Climbing Festival

Come join climbers from around the United States that gather for this festival of indoor climbing. The Flatland Climbing Festival is part of the USA Climbing College Climbing Series and is open to all climbers with three different levels to compete in: Beginner (5.6-5.8), Recreational (5.8-5.9), Intermediate (5.9-5.10d) or Advanced (5.11+). This is a great opportunity to show others your climbing skill, while learning technique from experienced climbers from all areas. Even if you are not competing, don’t miss out on all the Flatland activities! Everyone is encouraged to come be a part of this awesome event!

From Gym to Crag
Outdoor Adventures Center Climbing Wall
Self Rescue
Tuesday & Friday | March 28 & 30 | 6–8:30 p.m.
These sessions cover basic self rescue and will give you a better grasp on managing an emergency in the vertical environment.
Sport Anchors
Tuesday & Thursday | January 31 & February 3 | 6–8:30 p.m.
These sessions cover anchoring for basic sport climbs and will help you understand what makes for a proper climb anchor.
$60 UNL student or Member | $75 General Public
Each session meets two times for two hours and will help you form foundational understanding and skills associated with various climbing techniques. While completion of these sessions won't get you set to climb El Cap, it will give you a better grasp on key climbing skills. Participants must possess a current Lead Climb Pass at the UNL Outdoor Adventures Center and should have at least one year of climbing experience. Prerequisite: able to lead climb

Common Questions

Age BreakdownExpectations and Privileges
5 years old Youth climbers must be climbing with their guardian or supervisor.
Parent or legal guardian must sign release, a family friend or temporary care giver cannot legally perform this duty.
Youth climbers cannot belay unless approved by Coordinator of Outdoor Adventures.
Youth climbers must pass a Youth Skills Check to ensure awareness of expectations in the facility.
16 years old Climbers are no longer able to climb as dependents on their guardian's Annual Pass.
Parent or legal guardian must sign release, a family friend or temporary care giver cannot legally perform this duty.
Climbers of this age are eligible to take a Belay Skills Check.
19 years old Legal Age of Majority in the State of Nebraska, meaning the climber can complete their own release.


Can I sign my own release form?
According to the Nebraska State Law, in order to sign the release form an individual must be 19 years of age or older.

If I am not a member or a student of UNL, may I use the climbing facility?
Yes! You can purchase a Day Pass for $15 at Member Service desk in the Outdoor Adventures Center. This provides access to the gym during regular hours.  A day pass includes access to all Campus Recreation Facilities as well.  If you are interested in climbing more consistently, please see our pass options [here] to find the level of access that fits your needs.

As a student of CREC member, how much does it cost?
Your first ‘Try-it Climb’ is free.  After using the free ‘Try-it Climb’, we encourage you to take a Climbing Basics Class.  The 2 hour class will get you up to speed on all of the technical stuff you’ll need to know to keep climbing consistently. After taking the class and passing the included skills check, you will have unlimited access to climbing during open hours for one year (access is only valid if you remain enrolled as a student at UNL).

Do I need to have climbing experience before I come to take the climbing class or use my 1 free climb per semester?
No! We see it as our job to help make climbing accessible to you.  If you are interested in trying out climbing come on in and we can get you set to go.

Try-It Climb FAQs

Will I need to fill out a waiver if I am going to use my free Try-It Climb?
Yes, If you are at least 19 years old, you will complete the form before you climb. If you are under the age of 19, you will need to have a "Guardian Youth Release" form signed before you come to the wall for the free walk up!

Where do I go and how do I use my free ‘Try-It Climb’?
Simply check in with the staff at the front desk of the Outdoor Adventures Center and let them know your you are interested in using the current semester's free ‘Try-It Climb’.
*Please note, ‘Try-it Climbs are only available beginning at noon each day. Additionally, staff can only accommodate a maximum of 2 Try-it Climbers simultaneously. If you are interested in climbing with a group of friends or family please see inquire about our group rentals and Family Climbs.

I have previous climbing experience, do I need to sit through another introductory class in order to climb?
No! You can perform a Top Rope Skills Check with our staff during normal operational hours. For UNL Students and CRec Members, the cost for a skills check is $20.00. After passing the skills check, it will remain valid for 365 days. If you are not a UNL student or CRec Member, the rate for a skills check is $25 and also includes a day pass for the remainder of the day.

Does the wall have belayers or anyone to climb with?
Yes! Staff are available beginning at noon each day. While they are available to assist you with your climbing or belaying needs, we strongly encourage you to connect with fellow climbers rather than rely on our staff for belays.
A Lead Climbing Skills Check is also available for the same rate. If you already possess a valid Top Rope Skills Check and would like to challenge to receive a Lead Climbing Skills Check, there is no charge for attempting the Lead option. However when you pass, your Lead Skills Check will expire on the original date of your existing Top Rope Skills Check.

Can I bring a group to the wall to climb?
Yes, we do offer group reservations. Typical rentals happen on weekend mornings when the wall is closed. Let us take care of your group outing, fill out the Climbing Wall Group Inquiry form.

Can I bring my own climbing gear?
You may use your own gear at the discretion of the wall staff.
